By 2050, the world will need to produce 70 percent more food than it does today, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Canada is one of the countries the world is counting on to deliver it. Meeting that expectation sustainably, season after season, depends on the health of Canadian soils and the efficiency of the inputs that sustain them. Increasingly, the science is pointing to a nutrient that has been quietly overlooked for decades: sulphur.

The current global population is just over eight billion, increasing at rate of about 0.85% per year (roughly 70 million added annually). This growing number of humans requires a growing number of things, food chief among them. Tasked with producing this food are many industries – agriculture, meat and dairy manufacturing and processing, grain and oilseed milling – whose technological advancements and international reach ensure the global food supply remains stocked.

Mention sulphur at a networking event and most people politely smile before looking for the nearest conversation. Mention that the sulphur in their body was forged inside an exploding star billions of years ago, and suddenly they're asking questions.
